Hawthorn Heavy Horses is a family run business based in Essex that specialises in using heavy horses for woodland and land management, using a combination of traditional and modern techniques. In addition we also run the Hylands Horses project at Hylands Park in Chelmsford, where as well as undertaking estate management using horses, we provide tourist carriage rides, wedding rides and educational demonstrations.
Currently we use two Suffolk Punch Horses called Holly and George, and a range of equipment from across the UK and the world.

As seen on the BBC
Holly recently spent 7 days extracting timber from an ancient woodland at the end of Stansted Airport. The BBC came to visit and the video can be seen here. An alternative piece from the Herts and Essex Observer can also be seen here.
April 2011 - New Arrival
On 21st April we welcomed a new Suffolk Punch to the team after the retirement of George last year. Easton Roy is a 2 year-old gelding, and having been broken into harness by Nigel Oakley of Rede Hall Farm Park, will now continue his training with us over the next 18 months. It is very exciting to have such a young Suffolk with us, and he is very much enjoying our new field and can be seen galloping and bucking about in the sunshine! He can also be found taking regular naps after tiring himself out! We will be updating the website shortly with pictures and information.
Grass Cutting for Thurrock Council - Hangman's Wood SSSI
Throughout the summer of 2011 Holly will continig to help to cut grass in a very sensitive way at Hangmans Wood SSSI for a more information please download our press release by clicking here
George Retires
Sadly we have to announce the George is retiring on 6th November and going to a new home in Suffolk. His leg injury has proved to be more extensive than we thought, and so he will be going to a new home where he can take time to recover as well as possible, and then be used for light work when he is ready. We will miss him greatly, but are very happy with his new home and know he will be well cared for.
